About

As a seafarer I provide straight forward, sensible and reliable expert witness services and consultancy based on over 45 years experience within the maritime industry, specializing in Ship-to-Ship global operations, maneuvering of vessels of all sizes, and pilotage. Past cases include specialist advice on STS incidents, ship handling, pilotage, towage and the defense of personal injury claims. I have experience in giving live testimony in the US Federal Court at both Judge and Jury trials.

Following training in 2024 / 2025 I received formal approval and began part time instructing USCG and MCA courses, up to and including management level, at the USA’s most extensive private maritime training facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In October 2025 I completed 13 years employment as a Mooring Master / Pilot in the lightering trade, undertaking underway ship-to-ship transfers of oil, offshore in the USA and South America and decided to return to employment ashore. I went back to sea in the summer of 2012 after over eight years ashore, working as a Marine Consultant in Houston, Texas. I emigrated from the UK to the USA in January 2004, leaving the London Pilotage Service where I was a first class Marine Pilot. Before becoming a Pilot, I was Master of high-speed ferries, initially hydrofoils, then mono- and multi-hull ro-ro/passenger vessels. My seagoing career formally (I left school with almost 6 months sea time!) began with Cunard Shipping Services Ltd. where I served as a deck officer in various ranks, gaining experience of a wide variety of vessels. In 2009 I achieved a Pass with Distinction, MA Work Based Learning Studies (Marine Accident Investigation), from Middlesex University, London and was elected a Fellow of the Nautical Institute in the same year. Following on from my research degree, I wrote the book Mentoring at Sea – The 10 minute challenge which was published by the Nautical Institute in December 2012 and a 2nd edition, Mentoring at Sea – The 10 minute challenge goes on published in 2024. In October 2013 I was awarded the British Merchant Navy Medal for services to the maritime industry and The Nautical Institute. In 2013 on request of some of my former consultancy clients, I founded DNA Marine USA LLC to offer my services as expert witness, consultant and instructor based on my 45 years’ experience in the maritime industry. In 2020 I was elected Senior Vice President of The Nautical Institute, a six year voluntary commitment of my time and, due to time commitments, I decided not to pursue any further expert witness work until this commitment was complete in 2026. I was honored to serve as their President 2022 – 2024 and Immediate Past President 2024 - 2026. My Wife and I live in Florida, USA and have three adult children and two grandchildren, all settled in various parts of the US.
